Decided to take up fencing again. There’s a fencing school across the road from me so it couldn’t be more convenient. They have a decent setup, you can happily go along on Tuesday’s for open epee fencing. They have a shop there as well for the kit, so I was able to get all the gear which I had never done before. All though they offer the kit if you are taking one of their course I felt happier getting my own kit. I’m sure the students there are happy as well given the rate at which I sweat here in Singapore anyway, not to mention being suited up in the fencing gear. They’re friendly enough as well which is nice, one of the people I spoke to when joining at the weekend also came along. He was going to be fencing but work commitments kept him from doing so this evening. However, he still came along to make sure I got settled in. Bloody decent gesture, I thought. Tonight I was the only ang moh there which is always a bit awkward. The full-time coach has been recruited from China and speaks Mandarin to the students he’s coaching so that makes you feel a bit out of the loop. He’s friendly though and his English seems a bit awkward so it’s not like there’s any sense of exclusivity. My fencing is still shite though; seven years of ‘maturing’ hasn’t done much for me :) We’ll see how this goes…
