Ah it's grand.
Sure.

Just starting to play with the theme capabilities of WordPress. It was time that I started to make it my own. Still not there as I realised that my knowledge of CSS is woeful. So all the fonts are based on the original theme I edited – Kubrick (one of those supplied with WordPress). Still it’s a start; comments from everyone except Andrew are welcome :)

Really strange experience last night when things started to sway. Turns out the cause was an earthquake in Indonesia and not the Delirium Tremens I thought I might be suffering from. Rather nasty hangover on Sunday and I thought the after effects were still troubling me. First time I felt something like that and it was quite odd; a giddy sensation rather than an awareness of swaying. Talking to my brother, on IM, back home, he likened the sensation to what he felt during the bombing of Staples Corner (London) when he lived nearby.

What a glorious thing an Irish Breakfast is!
I probably should quote something from Robert Burns at this stage, but that would probably be considered plagiarism with the new IP laws here in Singapore so I won’t. Instead a picture is worth a thousand words so there it is.

Now that I’ve kind of advertised the blog, I really should add some more entries.

St Patrick’s Day is a good place to start and an amusing one too. Known more for its gratuitous and uninhibited drinking more than the religious aspect, expectation for the craic __is high. SODs is the usual venue but I met MC for dinner, on Orchard, earlier as we had a bit to chat about (LUGS – I’ll explain some other time). When we made it down to SODs the place was pretty packed and MB, ND, LKY and SF were there along with a good few of the SODS regulars. Different musician playing this year which was interesting, pretty skilled on the guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and harmonica. Doesn’t sing as much which is a shame, though it did give an opening for a few of the regulars to belt out a song. Still I missed Ken’s rendition of Lanigan’s Ball __on the bodhran.

There’s a big furore all over the place about the alleged firing by Google of an employee for blogging inappropriate material. It’s unfortunate for the guy involved, I feel sorry for him as Google would be somewhere very cool to work. However, blogging about your place of work isn’t the best thing to do unless you’re sure what you write won’t cause offence.

The only work related things I post here relate to the particular place I’m in, e.g. my post on being in Jakarta. Makes you think though, spitting out what’s on your mind onto the internet could land you in a real hole. Not necessarily because of what you post but the audience it reaches i.e. a shit load of people.

Decided to take up fencing again. There’s a fencing school across the road from me so it couldn’t be more convenient. They have a decent setup, you can happily go along on Tuesday’s for open epee fencing. They have a shop there as well for the kit, so I was able to get all the gear which I had never done before. All though they offer the kit if you are taking one of their course I felt happier getting my own kit. I’m sure the students there are happy as well given the rate at which I sweat here in Singapore anyway, not to mention being suited up in the fencing gear. They’re friendly enough as well which is nice, one of the people I spoke to when joining at the weekend also came along. He was going to be fencing but work commitments kept him from doing so this evening. However, he still came along to make sure I got settled in. Bloody decent gesture, I thought. Tonight I was the only ang moh there which is always a bit awkward. The full-time coach has been recruited from China and speaks Mandarin to the students he’s coaching so that makes you feel a bit out of the loop. He’s friendly though and his English seems a bit awkward so it’s not like there’s any sense of exclusivity. My fencing is still shite though; seven years of ‘maturing’ hasn’t done much for me :) We’ll see how this goes…

I’ve been having a lot of trouble with Mail.app recently. Having got IMAPS up and running on our server, everything has been pretty good. However, I noticed an issue today when I wanted to check on a mail I had sent earlier. The mail wasn’t in ‘Sent’! The only mails that were stored there were those that had been sent using the web interface (Squirrelmail). I also noticed the following message in Console.app:

I had noticed this before but had never been able to tie it to a particular event, until now. Google didn’t help me this time unfortunately. Most of what it turned up related to the IMAP folder prefix which wasn’t the case here. Lots of places described this a Mail.app ‘bad behaviour’ issue. I decided to have a look in the Apple Discussion forums instead (I’m pretty sure they block them from being indexed or cached by Google). No joy when searching for my ‘Invalid mailbox name’ so I had to resort to going through all issue with sent items in Mail.app that had been posted. Very fortunate for me; I didn’t have to look for long for something that was suggested yesterday! Allan, the poster had suggested to another user to do the following with particular mailboxes:
To save copies of messages in a different mailbox, select the mailbox you want to use. Choose Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Sent.
Problem solved and a good start to the Year of the Rooster. To see how this works, here’s an account as it would appear when I’ve just added it under Preferences > Account:

Two days after I got back to Singapore I was off to Bangkok for work. It’s interesting working with the new partner company and their software. Their people are also rather interesting too, but it’s best to be tight-lipped on that one! I enjoy going to Bangkok as it is much more laid back than here in Singapore and people generally come across as more genuine. Not that we were really out and about that much, it has to be said.

For some reason I decided to do some searching on ‘citóg’. This is the spelling I was used to as I grew up. Turns out it’s a bad corruption of the word ‘ciotóg’. That pissed me off just a bit as I have used ‘citog’ quite a bit here and there ..

Not much sleep on the flight over to London, no real surprise there as I never really sleep on planes anyway. Did miss the personal video screen of other airlines but not that much, my eyes need a break from screens. I had my iPod anyway and had some comedy podcasts that kept me entertained for awhile.

However, got to Heathrow and across to Terminal 1 quick enough (loads of time anyway as C isn’t going to be here for awhile – thought she might as well get some sleep today rather than have both of us tired and grumpy) so I went off in search of a fry. Wetherspoons obliged. Nothing fantastic about it but at least it was tastier than most fare found in Singapore.
