Ah it's grand.
Sure.

testing the palm os based client

This is a test from my Tungsten T! This time I’m using Vagablog

I remembered that I have Fink installed on my PowerBook around the same time that I decided I wanted to install GIMP. So, off I went with a source install, last Saturday. You may wonder why I decided to install from source. Well the original idea was of course to squeeze the maximum out of this machine. The second reason was because I wasn’t convinved it would work any other way. You see, Fink on 10.3 gets into horrible circular dependencies if you try to use the binary version. So it has to be built from 0.6.x source. So I’m up and running again and have a few of the GIMP dependencies installed . Now, aa-fucking-lib (aalib, just in case) won’t install because it depends on x11. Hmmm… is that the X11 I installed to run OpenOffice. Fuck knows! OpenOffice runs quite nicely with the X11 included with Panther, by the way.

This is the first posting to my MovableType blog

Well, more accutately the GIMP is installed. That was major hassle, but it’s done and runs quickly so I’m happy. Not going to go into the detail here. But I do have a lot of the Terminal stuff logged, so I’ll post it when I get a chance. Suffice to say, you need your X11 SDK from the Xcode CD because this isn’t in there from the default install. ‘A-Ha’, I hear you say. ‘Fuck’, you hear me shout. Basically you get a conflict between the /usr/X11R6 installed by Xcode and the x11 that Fink would like to install. Once Fink is told the way things go, you can get down to a nice long source install. That runs trouble free from there on in.

It has changed name from 0.7 to 0.8. Naturally I’ve downloaded it and already I like it. From an aesthetic point of view it’s a huge improvement on 0.7. Pages seem to load quicker, though graphic rich pages render in a slightly odd way. Maybe it’s just me who finds it odd to watch the page built and graphics slotted into their placeholders so quickly … it’s like watching a normal browser load at a higher speed …

Sent this as feedback to Orkut today …

I’ve only been using Orkut for a few days, but so far I’m enjoying the environment. There are two suggestions that I think would make things a bit more comfortable. At the same time I appreciate you are in a beta phase, so it’s feedback not criticism!

– An option in user settings to set timezone would make it easier to keep track of forum activity. Right now, if I glance at the summary in ‘Communities’, I have to do a calculation to figure out how recent the posting is. Even though I deal with people in multiple timezones on a regular basis, it’s a pain in the arse. Localising the time to the user setting is more friendly

After going back and doing a make deinstall on libxml2 and going through eveything again (along with several dependencies) I can run Gnome again. Will have to wait and see how it goes, as I’ve been here before and thought everything was ok. For now, trying to get galeon2 installed which is proving fun!

Been on Orkut for a few days now after an invite from Eugene. There’s a decent enough setup with lots of communities springing up. People seem to have taken to it with quite a lot of enthusiasm and parted with a fair amount of information. There’s also a reasonable male to female ratio. Google’s policy of allowing people to join by invitation only is quite an interesting approach. One wonders if it is motivated out of beta-testing or some form of social engineering.
