I’m packing up the computer room again (well I’m not actually I keep getting distracted) as I’ll be moving apartment shortly. Made slightly more difficult by the fact that I will almost certainly be in New Zealand while the move happens. Thankfully my housemate is taking charge of the move and I just need to have everything boxed (simple task, one would assume). Doing this sort of task means that I actually update things that I haven’t touched in ages; the front page of igallagher.com got an update. I’m even going through links that I put into del.icio.us which I intended to follow many weeks ago.
It wouldn’t be a proper blog entry of mine without having a bitch about something and so today it is food.
As an aside it wouldn’t be a proper blog entry of mine without some swearing but that’s not going to happen as I don’t swear anymore
I live up the road from Newton Circus hawker centre and the temporary version of same is only a few minutes further on. While most locals will tell you that Newton Circus is just for tourists and ang mohs it is usefully close when you’re hungry and lazy. So off we went, both last night and tonight. Last night was simple, I wanted Mee Goreng and C wanted Oyster Omelette. Didn’t get the Mee Goreng I wanted, I said I wanted chicken rather than mutton, so you don’t get the red spicy one – forgot about that. The problem is not the wrong Mee Goreng but the constant harassment you get while walking around. The persistent shouting by the hawkers at you – ‘You want seafood’ or ‘Seafood!!’ gets annoying after awhile because it breaks an obvious conversation with the person you’re walking around with. Then they’re blocking your path, shoving menus in your face and being aggressive trying to sell you something that you will probably be over-charged for. Saying ‘no thanks’ just doesn’t work – you’re insulting them by being an ang moh and not buying seafood. How dare you be happy with your few dollars of Mee Goreng and a Milo Peng. Fuckers (I lied earlier and it was premeditated).
Went back again tonight so that I could have the Mee Goreng I wanted (which was very tasty, stall 64 does a decent job but they should work on their Murtabak).
